More Than a Book: What I’m Building Next

It’s been a year since I decided to retire from full-time corporate America after more than thirty years in leadership. Plenty of folks asked what I planned to do next.

Over this past year, I've had the opportunity to write Built on Purpose, speak with leaders across industries, work alongside executives who are shaping the future of their organizations, and launch a few passion projects that have been years in the making.

It’s been so much fun!

I've realized is that all of these efforts are connected by a few themes: slowing down, learning, creating and helping others. I swear I feel a year younger, not older!

Built on Purpose has opened new conversations

Writing Built on Purpose has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career. The conversations that followed have been even better.

I've been fortunate to join podcasts, television interviews and leadership discussions with people who care deeply about building healthy cultures, developing leaders and creating stronger organizations.

If you'd like to listen to recent conversations or watch interviews, I've gathered them together on the Media page of my website. My interview with Helen Honisett’s podcast “So You Want to Be a Leader…Really?” was just released last week, and is worth 20 minutes of your time. I also have a series of short- and long-form videos there. I hope you'll find something that resonates with your own leadership journey. I’ll keep adding content.

Helping leaders build organizations that last

One pleasant surprise since publishing the book has been hearing the question, "How do we put these ideas into practice?"

That's exactly why I created Petera Leadership Group.

Today I work with leaders in three primary ways.

The 90-Day Culture Reset helps leadership teams strengthen culture, improve alignment and build practical systems that connect strategy with execution.

PLG Advisory provides ongoing thought partnership for executives navigating growth, organizational change and leadership challenges. Sometimes you just need a sounding board.

Executive Writing & Thought Leadership helps experienced leaders turn decades of knowledge into books, articles, keynote presentations and ideas that leave a lasting impact. I just finished helping an executive finish her book and ready it for publishing, and it was hugely rewarding. Helping others tell their stories has become one of the most meaningful parts of my work.

Building things simply because I love them

Not everything I'm building fits neatly into leadership consulting, and that's intentional.

I launched Thinkistry Press, a publishing imprint dedicated to practical journals, workbooks and other content designed to help people run their lives more practicallly, and to think and grow. It's a creative outlet that lets me continue developing resources for lifelong learners. I sell these on Amazon, and have added a page to my website with links to my ever-growing population of books. They make great gifts (wink emoji)!

I've also been pouring energy into a completely different passion project called ACC Road Trip.

As a lifelong college sports fan and Virginia Tech graduate, I've spent years traveling to sporting events around the country. ACC Road Trip is a local’s playbook for every ACC college town. Where to go, where to stay, where to eat, plus traditions and hidden gems into one resource designed to help fans make the most of every game weekend.

It's been an incredible creative challenge, one that's brought together my love of writing, storytelling, travel and college sports. And I learned how to vibe code! It’s going live this week, and I’m so excited about it.

Wherever our paths intersect...
